Course Descriptions

Technique

African - exposure to contemporary West African vocabulary of movement. This
class builds stamina, develops coordination, rhythm, and endurance.

Creative Movement - organized creative activities and dance (pre-ballet) with main focus on coordination, rhythm, balance and enhancement of motor skill development (2 levels).

Ballet - development in the basics of classical ballet technique with emphasis on correct body alignment, barre work, simple center floor, across the floor applications in the Cecchetti method.

Jazz - introduction to fundamentals of jazz techniques, development of body alignment, coordination, strength, and rhythm. Some Hip-Hop included.

Modern - Horton, Graham, and Jeff technique based that develops skill in space usage, body awareness, coordination, musicality, and dynamics.

Tap - skills in basic tap steps and vocabulary, use of various rhythms fused into traditional Broadway style and contemporary hoffin combinations.

Technique

Dance Composition I - students will establish a common foundational vocabulary for describing what we see and do physically to express the Word of God in movement, develop creative method of generating movment messages, and determine how to use text (The Word) with movement.

Foundations of Liturgical Dance - the purpose of this study is to introduce through scripture, the history of dance in the church, the scriptural meaning of movement in the Body of Christ, experience the Old Testament patterns of praise and worship, and to be able to apply those patterns to the worship experience of today.

Dance History I
- students will explore the past development of dance and its connections to the present and future of dance as it relates to movement ministry.

Purpose and Power of Praise and Worship - the purpose of this study is to explore the purpose of dance ministry as it serves the church during the praise and worship portions of the service, the difference between praise and worship, techniques in following and leading a dance team of worshippers, and basic movement that a congregation can share with.

Dance Anatomy I
- students will study the physical structures of the skeletal system of the human body as it relates to movement in dance.
